Back-to-School Season in Arolla
When the valley empties, the larch and arolla forest takes on its finest colours. The patois trail, golden light and recovered calm: the late season is the gentlest.

The back-to-school season has something gentle about it in Arolla. The families have left, the trails empty, and the mountain begins its finest season. The air cools, the light softens, and the larch and arolla forest slowly dresses in gold and copper. At the Grand Hôtel & Kurhaus, open until mid-November, this is the moment we prefer.
Recovered calm
In September, Arolla recovers its silence. The walkers met on the trails can be counted, the terraces breathe, and the village returns to its end-of-season rhythm. It is the dream late season for anyone seeking the mountain without the crowd: still-bright days, already-cool evenings, and the luxury of having the place almost to yourself.
A trail for learning patois
The season comes with a novelty we love: a patois nature trail, winding through the larch and arolla forest. A dozen panels, created with the dialectologist Gisèle Pannatier, reveal the words and expressions of the Évolène patois — one of the last still alive in the Valais, still heard in the cafés and shops of the valley. A walk to be heard as much as walked.
The colours of autumn
As September advances, the larches turn to gold and the forest composes its finest contrasts. It is the season of forest baths, of walks in the low light, and of returns by the fire. Dusk draws in earlier, and the stag’s bellow sometimes echoes in the distance: autumn settles in.
The table of the season
At the table of L’Honorine, the late season has its flavours: game, mushrooms, valley produce. After a day’s walking, this is the moment to sit down unhurried, a glass of Valais wine in hand, while night falls over the summits.
Back-to-school season in Arolla is no ending: it is the entry into the most peaceful of seasons. The one when the mountain, at last quiet, lets itself be contemplated.
