Winter in the mountains is not just about skiing! As we wrote in our previous post « what to do this winter at the Grand Hotel Kurhaus » , with or without skis, Arolla is the nugget resort far from the crowds, it seduces the lovers of wild nature by its exceptional location, at the foot of the glaciers and snowy peaks: the Mont-Collon, the Pigne d’Arolla, the Aiguille de la Tsa.

The mountain in its winter finery is the beauty of snowy landscapes and the invigorating air of the Alps. It’s blue, white and sunny! A universe of silence in a padded decor.

You don’t ski ?!

At the door of the hotel, a small contemplative walk takes you to the pine forest and plunges you into an elsewhere in the airs of the Great North with its trees plastered with snow. No need to go far and walk for a long time to be amazed. Beautiful winter walks, on foot or snowshoes, will make you discover Arolla and its surroundings.

Thanks to our partner, you can rent a pair of snowshoes and get initiated to the practice with a hike to the unavoidable blue lake and the mayens du Louché. Or put on walking crampons and walk on the winter path along the Borgne river with the crossing of the hamlets of Arolla: Monta, Pramousse, Satarna. The river meanders through a large snow field. There is an atmosphere of the end of the world with breathtaking landscapes where Nordic activities for all are queens: winter walks, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, ice climbing.

Even for non-skiers, the discoveries and activities are many and varied: winter hiking in all its forms, visiting the authentic alpine villages of Val d’Hérens, savouring the local produce, meeting the locals, sunbathing, lazing on the high altitude terraces and simply breathing in this art of mountain living.

At an altitude of 2000 meters, Arolla attracts sportsmen and snowboarders, but it is also a great winter garden to slow down, take time for yourself and take an alpine break in an overworked daily life.

When you return from your walks, the hotel’s historic lounges invite you to this timeless break, with a book in your hand facing the mountain. Under the portraits of the builders, Honorine and Jean-Baptiste, you will settle down in our comfortable leather sofas, listen to the crackling of the fireplace, play chess, enjoy our tea-time and perhaps experience winter differently.

Are you ready to give in to the call of the mountains, stay at the Grand Hotel Kurhaus and enjoy the winter magic in Arolla, the last village at the end of the Val d’Hérens ?
